Most English learners do not have a knowledge problem.They have a recall problem.They study the vocabulary. They understand the grammar. They recognize the phrase when they see it. They nod during the lesson and think, “Yes, I know this.”But then something happens.A manager asks an unexpected question. A client calls. An interviewer says, “Tell me about your experience.” A colleague asks for their opinion in a meeting.And suddenly…Their mind goes blank.This does not mean they are bad at English.It means they have practiced recognizing English more than retrieving English.And those are not the same skill.Recognition sounds like:<blockquote>“I understand this word when I see it.”</blockquote>Recall sounds like:<blockquote>“I can use this word naturally when I need it.”</blockquote>That is the real goal.For adult professionals, English must be available under pressure.Not only in a textbook. Not only in an app. Not only during a calm lesson. Not only when the teacher gives examples first.You need English when:<ul><li>you are in a meeting</li><li>you are giving a presentation</li><li>you are answering interview questions</li><li>you are speaking with a client</li><li>you are taking an exam</li><li>you are explaining a problem</li><li>you are trying to sound polite, clear, and confident</li></ul>That is why I use a learning approach based on four steps:T — Test it Close the notes. Try to remember. Say it back. Use it in a sentence.R — Retain it Review it again tomorrow, next week, and next month. One lesson is not enough.A — Associate it Connect the English to your real job, real conversations, real emotions, and real goals.P — Perform it Use the language in realistic situations: meetings, calls, interviews, emails, and presentations.Because understanding English is not the finish line.Using English under pressure is the finish line.For example, it is not enough to understand the phrase:<blockquote>“I’d like to follow up on…”</blockquote>You need to be able to use it in real situations:<blockquote>“I’d like to follow up on our conversation from yesterday.” “I’m following up to confirm the next steps.” “I wanted to follow up regarding the proposal.”</blockquote>Then you need to practice it:<ul><li>in an email</li><li>in a phone call</li><li>in a meeting</li><li>with no notes</li><li>with a time limit</li><li>with follow-up questions</li></ul>That is how English becomes automatic.So if you often think, “I know this, but I can’t remember it when I speak,” you are not alone.You do not need more passive studying.You need more retrieval, repetition, connection, and real communication practice.That is how you move from:<blockquote>“I understand English.”</blockquote>to:<blockquote>“I can use English when it matters.”</blockquote>Question: What English word, phrase, or grammar point do you understand when you study — but forget when you speak?#BusinessEnglish #ESLLearning #EnglishFluency #ProfessionalEnglish #LearnEnglish #EnglishCommunication #AdultEnglishLearners #WorkplaceEnglish
